Cooking with Cannabis 101

Cooking With Cannabis Blog
Have you been curious about making your own edibles home, but not sure where to start? You’ve come to the right place to learn. In this blog, we will explore the different methods of cooking and baking with cannabis at home. Read on to see how you can use various products available in our store, like distillate, FECO, and flower, to create delicious treats!
Distillate oil is a cannabis extract where all materials other than THC have been stripped away. This type of oil is desirable when making edibles due to its complete lack of flavor, taste, and aroma. There is no need to worry about a ‘hashy’ taste when creating edibles with distillate, making it incredibly versatile for home cooks. This method is ideal for anyone living with roommates, or can’t risk leaving a distinct cannabis smell at home. We recommend the Double Bear 1g Distillate Applicator, available in our stores. Follow these steps to make edibles using distillate;
- Place the distillate container in warm water, in order to loosen up the oil.
- Measure out the desired amount.
- Add the distillate to your cooking oil or melted butter.
- Mix thoroughly to ensure distillate is evenly distributed. This mixture can be used in any recipe.
- Combine the distillate/oil/butter with dry ingredients.
- Pour batter into baking dish/pan and place in oven.
FECO, short for Full Extract Cannabis Oil, is a concentrated whole-plant extract that is rich with terpenes and cannabinoids. If you’re looking for full-on cannabis flavor in your edibles, this is the product for you to use. By keeping all of the original plant materials in tact, this method is best for those looking for medicinal benefits. We recommend the Vivid 1mL FECO, available in our stores. Follow the steps below in order to use FECO in your treats at home;
- Place FECO syringe over the steam of hot water in order to loosen up the oil.
- Measure our the desired amount of FECO
- Melt butter/oil with FECO over medium-low heat.
- Mix thoroughly to ensure FECO is evenly distributed. This mixture can be used in any recipe.
- Combine the FECO/oil/butter with dry ingredients.
- Pour batter into baking dish/pan and place in oven.
Flower is the most labor-intensive cannabis material to start with, and the dosing is difficult to measure. However, creating your own extract is incredibly rewarding! For an in-depth look at how to calculate the dosing when cooking with flower, check out this article from WeedMaps; https://weedmaps.com/learn/products-and-how-to-consume/calculating-dose-homemade-edibles. Next time you are in store, ask your budtender what infusers we have in stock. We typically have the Magical Butter, or Ardent Flex Infusers in stock for you to pick up. Follow these steps to make your own infused butter/oil with flower;
- Spread small pieces of bud in a thin layer across a sheet of parchment paper on a baking sheet.
- Using aluminum foil, cover the baking sheet
- Bake for 25-30 minutes at 230 Degrees.
- Let cool.
- The decarboxylated flower can now be used in recipes to make infused butters or oils.
With so many different options to create your own infused foods at home, anyone can find the right product to start with. For a quick and easy way to dose your foods, go for the Distillate or FECO options. If you are looking start from scratch and spend more time in the kitchen, look into starting with Flower.
